The Brilyante ng Apoy (English: Gem of Fire/Fire Gem) is one of the five elemental gems in the Filipino fantasy series Encantadia. It represents the element of fire, symbolizing heat, life, and passion. Within the lore of the series, it is sometimes described as the most powerful among the five elemental gems.

Background[]

After the Mother Gem was divided to prevent it from being misused for evil ends, the Gem of Fire was entrusted by Cassiopeia to King Arvak of Hathoria as part of the kingdom's share of power and protection. However, as the Hathor hungered for more power, they began their campaign to claim all the other Gems for themselves, easily taking the Gem of Water from the helpless Adamyans. They tried to take the Gem of Earth from Sapiro but failed, Arvak losing his life in the process and Raquim claiming the Fire and Water Gems before he died. In order to protect the Gems better, all of them were placed under Lireo's care.

During the beginnings of the conflict with Hathoria, it was stolen from Lireo by Sang'gre Pirena who aimed to use it to usurp the Lirean throne from her sister, Amihan. However, the Gem would soon return to Hathoria after Hagorn reclaims it from Pirena, only ever returning it to the Sang'gre of Lireo after his first defeat. While it remained in Lireo after a time of peace, it would soon find its way back in the hands of its chosen master, Pirena, who would initially reclaim it with reluctance after everything she committed in the name of power. However, she would use the Gem not as a weapon for conquest but for protecting Encantadia at large.

The Gem would remain with Pirena until it was stolen from her by Kera Mitena of Mine-a-ve. Mitena would then bestow this Gem to her ovlar Olgana to aid her in her mission in the mortal realm. Pirena would soon reclaim the Gem and return to Encantadia with it, but would bear witness to the sacrifice of Alipato, its twin spirit, that would lead to the Gem's dormancy. After traveling to Devas and convincing Lavanea (the original twin spirit of the Gem of Fire) to return to the Gem, it was then presented to Flamarra whom it remained with since.

Forms[]

The Brilyante ng Apoy has two forms: an active and an inert state. In either form, it is deep red in color with the symbol of Hathoria visible in its center and shaped in a pear cut/teardrop shape meant to evoke flames. In the 2005 series, it is shaped in an inverted pyramid. Primarily, it hovers in the air with its characteristic circle below it, a flame constantly burning underneath it once it is summoned on its keeper's palm. However, when its Kambal Diwa is killed, the Gem reverts to its tangible form, rendering it inert.

In the 2005 series, however, the Gem can either be tangible or intangible while retaining its power, as when Pirena tried to steal it for herself the first time, it first appeared as intangible but once she took it in her hands, it solidified.

Gabay/Kambal Diwa[]

Alipato was the Gabay/Kambal Diwa, which the gem's keeper could summon. He made multiple appearances in the first book of the 2005 series, being notably absent for its remainder and even into the 2016 remake. In 2025, he makes his first full appearance since, with the additional notion that a Kambal Diwa is its respective gem's source. After Alipato sacrificed his life to protect his then master Pirena, Lavanea (the ancient twin spirit of the Fire Gem) returned to house herself within it once more. Since returning to the Gem, as with all the others, it has become more powerful, allowing for feats previously inaccessible to earlier keepers and much more resistant to being stolen from its keeper as their loyalties were personally earned by those who now guard them.

However, for the first time in the franchise, the Gem now houses two twin spirits after Terra commanded the ancient twin spirits to bring their zombified successors back into their Gems. That being said, the long-term ramifications of this choice remain to be seen.

Powers and Abilities Granted[]

Since the gem is the physical representation of the element, fire, it gives its keeper total dominion over fire, heat, and light.

Core Elemental Powers[]

Summary of the powers gem posted in the official Facebook page. However, the powers the gem had manifested were more than what is listed.

  • Teleportation – The supernatural ability known as “Ivictus,” normally innate to the Diwata of royal blood, permits its keeper to instantly transport themselves and others they bring with them from one location to another without occupying the space in between. Keepers would disappear and reappear in a burst of flame and smoke. Pirena used Ivictus countless times, often employing it to escape dire combat situations, instantly travel between Lireo, Hathoria, and the mortal realm, and even to swiftly reach the Asnamon Tree in her attempts to evade capture.
  • Pyrokinesis - Keepers of this Gem possess the ability to create and control fire for a variety of offensive and even defensive purposes. With it, its keeper is able to launch balls of flame at their targets, set fires on anything within their line of sight, project streams of fire for more continual offense, and even contain enemy threats in a circle of fire. Their effects on living targets range from burning their flesh at varying degrees to rendering them to ash near instantaneously. When angered, a keeper would often unleash waves of intense heat and flame able to topple entire forests or even entire kingdoms. Keepers also magically imbue their weapons with the Gem's power, setting them aflame increasing the damage potential of their strikes. Pirena made very good use of these abilities that the Gem possesses when she was its primary keeper. A more mystical aspect of this power is the ability to render another person comatose by drawing out the "fire of their life" and housing it within the Gem, returning it only when the keeper sees fit, as Pirena and Hagorn did with Mira and Lira respectively. Perhaps the most impressive display of this power occurred in the 2005 installment, when Hagorn sent a volley of massive fireballs from the sky crashing down onto Sapiro, narrowly setting the ruins ablaze if not for Alena's shields; Pirena did the same later on in the series on a much larger scale, causing chaos throughout Encantadia with better success.
  • Weapon and Armor Summoning - As with all four Gems, the Brilyante ng Apoy is able to summon armor and weaponry for the keeper to use in battle. It also allows the keeper to recall their weapons back into the Gem when not needed. Finally, the Gem is able to bestow the armor and weapons of previous keepers upon them on command.

Pyrokinesis Sub-abilities[]

  • Weather Manipulation - A keeper of this Gem has the ability to influence the weather to varying degrees and on varying scales. In this Gem's case, they are able to interact with temperature, lightning, and even the Sun itself.
    • Temperature Manipulation (Positive) - A keeper of this Gem does not only have dominion over flame and light; it also grants them power over heat. For instance, this Gem can be weaponized to increase another person's body temperature to excruciating levels, as Arvak did with Cassiopea and Hagorn did with Amihan. It can also be used to increase the temperature of objects, as Pirena did to the weapons in Lireo's armory, rendering them useless in the thick of battle. Another application of this power is the ability to detect an individual by locking onto their thermal signatures, as Pirena did to locate her niece Lira in the mortal world.
    • Lightning Generation and Manipulation - When used in conjunction with the Soul Gem to magnify its pre-existing powers, keepers of the Gem are able to summon lightning, as Hagorn did to intimidate his enemies during his occupation of Lireo.
    • Solar Manipulation - A keeper of the Gem possesses the terrifying ability to command the sun itself. For instance, after Pirena claimed the Gem for herself and returned it to Hathoria, the sky was covered in dark, thundering clouds and snow began to fall. Additionally, when its keeper is consumed by intense rage and grief, the sun's normally white light deepens into a dark, bloody red. Conversely, Flamarra took this a step further by restoring the sun's warmth and light to the entirety of Encantadia after the dark winters brought upon by the Gem's initial dormancy.
  • Immunity to Fire and Heat - Understandably, a keeper of the Gem of Fire would be granted immunity to being harmed by the element it commands. Pirena survived the explosion that came with the booby-trapped letter her father sent Lireo without a scratch.
  • Flight – A keeper of the Brilyante ng Apoy is not only able to produce flames from their hands. They are also able to produce them from their feet, allowing them to simulate levitation and flight by means of jet propulsion with an at least decent amount of maneuverability in the air, as demonstrated by Pirena when fighting against airborne targets.

Special Abilities[]

  • Shapeshifting - Keepers of this Gem possess the ability to change their shape to that of another, even imitating their voices, granting various advantages in infiltration and espionage. This is an ability that Pirena retained even without the Brilyante in her possession. Her notable transformations include Ades, Agane, Amihan, Aquil, Danaya, Emre, Muros, Lira, Alena, Andora, Hagorn, Ether, and Mitena.
  • Telepathy - Keepers of this Gem possess the ability to interact with other's minds, primarily for communication. Pirena demonstrated this ability with the Gem summoned in hand to Mira and Lira to show them that any being with sufficient power can replicate the unique ability Cassiopea possesses.
  • Spellcasting - As with all the Gems, it can be used as a catalyst for spell casting, allowing its keeper to effect changes in reality itself with the use of spoken incantations invoking its power. Perhaps, of all four Gems, the Gem of Fire has its magical potential displayed the best throughout the series, especially in the capable hands of a keeper as well-learned and creative as Pirena. For instance, this Gem can be used to cast and revoke powerful curses, especially when used in conjunction with the other three Gems, such as Mine-a cursing the entire Hathorian kingdom, Mitena revoking the ability to teleport from Flamarra and Adamus, and the four new keepers when they expelled the Itim na Bato from Danaya's body.
    • Conjuration - Keepers of this Gem are able to magically create/summon matter from out of seemingly nothing, as Pirena did by replicating the weapons possessed by their Mulawin allies. She was even able to store away into nothingness and recall into her possession the Ginintuang Orasan on command by the Gem's power. A keeper of this Gem can also summon its Kambal Diwa on command as an extension of the Gem's essence, acting as an ally to its keeper. In the 2005 series, Hagorn used the power of the Gem of Fire to summon the Hadezar from whence they came to serve as allies in the final battle against their enemies.
    • Enchantment - Keepers of this Gem are able to bind magic into objects or people, granting them additional attributes or altering what is there to begin with. Pirena used this power to grant the Avatar the ability to cleave a fragment off of the Gem of Fire in their plans to deceive Hagorn. She also used this Gem to embolden the spirits of her allies prior to the final battle against Hagorn and Ether's forces. Despite Avria's defenses, she was able to grab onto the Ginintuang Orasan with her bare hands with the help of her Gem. Additionally, she used the Gem to impart knowledge into the minds of others, as Pirena did for Hitano and Alena when she brought them into the mortal realm. Olgana used the Gem to revoke the invisibility she, Veshdita, and Kosshava possessed upon entering the mortal realm, allowing them to wreak havoc more openly. Flamarra also used this aspect of the Gem's power to fortify the restraints placed on Zaur, Olgana, and Cami after they were captured by the Sang'gre.
      • Cursing - Keepers of this Gem are able to cast powerful curses on their targets, as Pirena was able to curse traitors in her armies who rejoined Hagorn by burning their faces, a callback to what her mother did to the Hathors of old.
    • Abjuration - Keepers of this Gem are able to conjure kingdom-wide barriers that prevent the use of Ivictus within its confines, like Hagorn and Pirena did once before, as well as forbid particular individuals from penetrating it, as Pirena did for Lireo against any Etherian prior to the Kubur's arrival. These shields are often cast alongside that of the other Gems in layers for added protection. While Hagorn required the assistance of the Water and Soul Gems to create his protections, Pirena only needed the Fire Gem to cast hers. Pirena has total control over these protections, allowing her to add to them or modify them as she sees fit, letting certain people in despite initally barring them from entry or adding the ability to detect certain individuals who approach the barrier. One can also conjure more personal shields around themselves that are generally resistant to most forms of harm, which can be amplified with the use of additional Gems. When the Gem is summoned, it protects its keeper from psionic attack, even from minds as powerful as Andora's.
    • Divination - Keepers of this Gem possess the ability to acquire information on the unknown through supernatural means. This allowed Pirena to anticipate Mitena's arrival at the Asnamon Tree as well as determining the truth behind Deia's destiny as the new keeper of the Gem of Air. Flamarra also made use of this ability by confirming that the woman who attempted to assassinate Terra was indeed her birth mother, Danaya. The Gem is even capable of detecting when an explosion is about to erupt, warning its keeper to act accordingly, as Pirena experienced after Hagorn sent a booby-trapped message to Lireo. In the 2005 installment, Hagorn made use of the Gem to visually locate and monitor his enemy's movements through projections it creates for him.
    • Evocation - A keeper of this Gem possesses the ability to send it out from their person to do their bidding without relinquishing their control over it. Pirena does this by commanding her Gem to seek out and attack who she believed to be Avria but was actually her sister Danaya.

Powers from the 2005–2006 Series Carried Over[]

  • Volcanic Field Manipulation - Keepers of this Gem have the ability to influence the volcanic fields beneath the Earth itself, as Hagorn demonstrated when he commanded Lavanea, the resident volcano in Encantadia, to erupt and cause untold devastation on the land, requiring the intervention of Amihan, Alena, and Danaya with their respective Gems to counteract it.
  • Mental Manipulation Immunity - Keepers of this Gem are innately immune to all forms of mental manipulation, including telepathy and mind control, as Pirena proudly stated that the Gem keeps her mind aflame.
  • Resurrection - Alipato, the Gem's spirit guide, possesses the ability to wrest a departed soul from Devas itself and bringing them back to life, body and all, better facilitated with the assistance of the Gem of Water. However, one cannot save another or themselves from grievous bodily harm with this power, as Pirena learned after being mistakenly injured by Amihan.

History of the Brilyante[]

The First Keepers of the Brilyante[]

During Mine-a's reign as Queen of Lireo, a diwata named Adhara raided Cassiopea's Island for her to take the Inang Brilyante. To protect it against anyone in Encantadia that would have the desire to use it for evil purposes, Cassiopea divided it into four smaller gems (it was later discovered that it was divided into five). To make sure the gems would not fall into the wrong hands, Cassiopea scattered the four elemental brilyantes to the rulers of the four kingdoms of Encantadia. The Brilyante ng Apoy was then entrusted to Haring Arvak by Cassiopea. The King of Hathoria was then blinded by more power and used the Brilyante to take the Brilyante ng Tubig from the Adamyans. This led to war between Hathoria and the other three kingdoms of Encantadia. As Arvak was about to obtain the Brilyante ng Lupa from the wounded Haring Armeo of Sapiro during the battle, he was eventually killed by Asval, relinquishing all the Brilyantes he had (including the Brilyante ng Apoy) to Rehav Raquim. After Arvak's death and the defeat of Hathoria, Raquim took the three Brilyantes and handed them over to Hara Mine-a, the current queen of Lireo at that time. In her possession, Mine-a used it for protection or for self-defense. She also used it along with the other three Brilyantes to curse Hathoria for attempting to kill her daughter Amihan.

Pirena obtains the Brilyante ng Apoy.

During the time of peace in the whole land of Encantadia, Mine-a keeps it in the guarded chamber along with the other three Brilyantes and the other treasures of Lireo. When Pirena came to steal the gems the first three refused her. Tired that it is difficult to obtain the gems, Pirena asked the Brilyante ng Apoy which is the only one left if it is willing to let her become its keeper. Unlike the other three gems, it did not resist when Pirena took it, thus, making her its keeper. Pirena sought for the gem's power when the soldiers started to awaken. The gem transformed Pirena's appearance to Aquil. Pirena brought it to Hathoria and returned it to Hagorn.

When the gem was returned to their possession, warmth and light disappeared. The whole Encantadia experienced a cold snow. Before the troops left for battle, Hagorn returned the gem to Pirena stating that she needs it more than he does and she can use it to show Mine-a that she made the wrong decision. After the war concluded, Danaya goes to Hathoria to bargain with Pirena and Hagorn telling them to bring back the light and warmth in Encantadia or Hathoria will experience calamities that will be casted by the other three gems. With no other option, Pirena brought back what Danaya asked them for. The gem has been in Pirena's possession until Amihan asks the gem back as proof that she has no ill intentions on her return. Pirena gives the gem back to clear Amihan's suspicions. Upon gaining Amihan's trust, the gem is returned to Pirena and she uses it to continue the plans that have long been interrupted by the chain of events. Pirena used the gem to imitate the appearances of Ades, Muros, Danaya and Amihan in order to cause confusion and misunderstandings between the people living in Lireo. Pirena also used the gem to sabotage the weaponry of the Lirean army and used it to fight Danaya and Amihan.

Hagorn requested to borrow the Gem of Fire from Pirena to invade the hideout of Amihan and her followers. Amihan managed to escape before Hagorn comes. Hagorn don't want to return the Gem of Fire and tells Pirena that he will take it until he kills Amihan.

In the Pagkakamali, Ybrahim threatens Hagorn to kill Pirena if he will not free Amihan. Hagorn complies to Ybrahim's deal and tells Pirena that he only saved her because he needs her to fight off their enemies and in exchange for her life is the Brilyante ng Apoy to be in his possession permanently.

Mulawin VS. Ravena[]

The Brilyante ng Apoy is used by Pirena to battle the Minokawa. She blasted it with an Energy Beam but it wasn't able to kill it. Pirena then used it to fight the Ravenas that appeared and attacked them when Lira had played the Mulawin Flute. Pirena also used the gem to scare away Tuka when the Ravena tried to kill Lawiswis by means of strangling.

2005-2006 series[]

The Gem of Fire is one of the four elemental gems. The gem grants its owner with the power to control fire. If the beholder already has this power, its owner's strength is heightened and diversified, enabling the person to control warmth, light and fire. In this sense, the beholder can intensify sunlight and conjure fire. This fire is sometimes used to create a portal window to see what other people are doing at the time. Fire can also be used as a container of power so that it may be transferred to others.

Alipato is the gabay diwa of the gem.

History[]

The Brilyante ng Apoy was first kept by Arvak when Cassiopea divided the Elemental gem and gave the Hathors their share, even though they are the reason why she has to divide the gem but Cassiopea hoped that the Hathors would change and use the Gem for good.

During the war, the gem was kept in a bag along with the two other gems collected by Arvak. Raquim managed to retrieve the gems and gave them to Mine-a for safekeeping. Since then it was kept inside a sealed room in Lireo. It remained safe there with all the other gems, until when Pirena sneaked into the sealed room to steal a gem that would aid her in her upcoming battle against Mine-a. The gem spoke to Pirena telling her to pick it as its powers are a perfect match to hers. The gem since then, has been in Pirena's possession. She refused to give up the gem until her death. Because Pirena died along with the gem, light and warmth disappeared from Encantadia. Hagorn performed a ritual to be able to get the gem from Pirena. When Hagorn successfully got the gem, light and warmth returned to Encantadia. At the conclusion of Book 1, Hagorn who was at the point of death, returned the gem to Pirena thus becoming its keeper once more. During the Book 3 of the series, Pirena used the gem to protect her mind from the control of Andora and destroy the kingdom of Hathoria.

Encantadia: The Second Saga[]

The Brilyante ng Apoy created Sang’gre Pirena's altar in the volcano (Lavanea) and settled there until Arde took it.

Portrayal[]

During the early episodes of the series, the Gem of Fire was portrayed as a gemstone (shown by the fact that Pirena had to literally hold the stone in her hands when she stole it). Later on in the show it took on a life of its own. It's powers were greatly expanded and like the other gems it was portrayed as a floating entity when summoned by its keeper. The jewel was given its own spirit guide, and the ability to choose its keeper.

Trivia (2016-2025)[]

The stronger bond between Pirena and the elemental gems, fueled by her loyalty, make the gems more powerful.

The stronger bond between Pirena and the elemental gems, fueled by her loyalty, make the gems more powerful.

  • According to Pirena, the Gem of Fire is the most powerful of all four elemental gems, which is something to note as it was able to withstand the powers of two gems (the Air and Soul Gems) when she clashed with Hagorn to take Lira and Mira back. Additionally, when pitted against the three Gems in Mitena's care, she was able to stand toe to toe with her opponent despite having only one Gem. She was even able to reclaim the Gem from Olgana by force twice, though the first time was merely a temporary success, However, it must be taken into account that Pirena is unique among the keepers of the Brilyante ng Apoy as she was the only known keeper chosen by the Gem and she kept it in her care for longer than most others, conveying an intimate understanding of how it works best and genuine mutual loyalty, which cannot be said for any of the mentioned opponents. Hence, it may be the most powerful in Pirena's hands.
    • It must be understood that no singular Gem outweighs any other in power at base level. One Gem's effectivity against other Gems is dependent on many factors, including the Gem's loyalty to its keeper.
    • However, another claim to support this case was seen in the 2005 installment, where despite having only the Gem of Fire at his disposal, Hagorn still proved to be a formidable threat due to the powers afforded to him by the Gem (though also possessing the Kabilan adds to his strength).
  • Between the 2005 and 2016 installments, the Gem changed shape. Initially, it was seen as an inverted pyramid in the 2005 series but was then shaped into a pear cut/teardrop by the 2016 installment as the art director wanted it to resemble its representative element better, that being a flame. Additionally, the gem presented with subtler changes in the 2025 installment, becoming slightly smaller and having cooler, pinker undertones in color.
  • It is interesting to note that keepers of the Gem of Fire are particularly (and even fittingly) vulnerable to the Gem of Air's ability to take away the breath of all that lives, as seen when Pirena was easily neutralized by this power three times and would have possibly been killed if it wasn't ceased or counteracted in either instance.
  • This is one of two Gems that Alena never got to keep, the other being the Gem of Air.
  • Fittingly, many of the keepers of the Gem of Fire after Cassiopea have Hathorian blood, including Arvak, Pirena, Hagorn, and Flamarra. It is a Gem that has also been held by every known ruler of Hathoria since Arvak.
  • In a recent poll conducted in GMA's website to promote Encantadia Chronicles: Sang'gre, visitors were presented with the question "Which Brilyante would you like to possess?" with the four elemental Gems as choices. The Gem of Fire ranked last on the poll, garnering 19.3% of all votes.
  • The Gem of Fire in 2016 bears the distinction of having the least number of total keepers (not counting the Brilyante ng Diwa).
  • In the 2005 installment, this was one of two Gems capable of resurrecting the dead, the other being the Gem of Earth.
  • Of the four gems in the 2016-2025 series, it is the Gem of Fire that possesses the most active Kambal Diwa, needing not be summoned to come to their master's aid. Alipato gave his life to protect Pirena and the rebels from Zaur and Lavanea emerged from the Gem to sway Flamarra from being fooled by Gargan's illusions.
