The Brilyante ng Lupa (English: Gem of Earth, Earth Gem) is one of the five elemental gems in the Filipino fantasy series Encantadia. It represents the element of Earth and is considered the mystical source of life for all animals and plants in the realm.

Background

After the Mother Gem was divided to prevent it from being misused for evil ends, the Gem of Earth was entrusted by Cassiopeia to Haring Armeo of Sapiro as part of the kingdom's share of power and protection. However, during the Hathorian campaign for absolute power, Sapiro became a target because of their possession of the Gem of Earth. Fortunately, the Hathor did not succeed and in order to further protect the Gems, it and the Gems of Fire and Water were all surrendered to the kingdom of Lireo, where it generally remained ever since (though it was temporarily stolen by denizens from both Etheria and Mine-a-ve before being reclaimed).

Forms

The Brilyante ng Lupa has two forms: an inert and an active state. In either form, its color is in shades of yellow, gold, and brown, with the symbol of Sapiro visible in its center and shaped in a rounded rectangle/pillow cut meant to evoke seeds. In the 2005 series, it is an emerald cut Gem, notable for its greater length compared to the other Gems. Primarily, it hovers in the air with its characteristic circle below it, joined by wisps of dust and dirt circling it once it is summoned on its keeper's palm. However, when its Kambal Diwa is killed, the Gem is rendered inert, reverting to a tangible form.

In the 2005 series, however, the Gem can either be tangible or intangible, as when Pirena tried to steal it for herself the first time, it was intangible but when Mine-a presented this Gem to Danaya, it rested on a pillow like an actual gemstone.

Gabay/Kambal Diwa

• Main Article: Sari-a (2005), Sari-a (2025), Harahen

Sari-a was the Gabay/Kambal Diwa that the keeper could summon. In the 2025 installment, after Sari-a was killed by Zaur, Harahen (the ancient Kambal Diwa of this Gem) returned to house within it once more. Since returning to the Gem, as with all the others, it has become more powerful, allowing for feats previously inaccessible to earlier keepers and much more resistant to being stolen from its keeper, as their loyalties were personally earned by those who now guard them.

However, for the first time in the franchise, the Gem now houses two twin spirits after Terra commanded the ancient twin spirits to bring their zombified successors back into their Gems. That being said, the long-term ramifications of this choice remain to be seen.

Powers and Abilities Granted

The Earth Gem, as its name suggests, has power over the Earth and all that dwell upon it, such as plants and animals. Such is that power that in the 2005 series, its departure from Encantadia would mean cataclysms for all that lives there. However, its keeper can choose to preserve whatever dominion the Gem holds over all life there despite being in another realm. Specific abilities that are exclusive to the Brilyante ng Lupa are listed below:

The effect of the keeper while in ivictus state.

• According to Hagorn, even if the keeper of the gem is in Ivictus state, the surroundings give a sign that they are present. For the Brilyante ng Lupa, the plants become bright and full of life if the keeper is around. In another instance, plants would grow in areas where there aren't any, creeping up from the ground as if to follow the keeper of this Gem. Conversely, in the 2005 series, if the Gem of Earth is not present within Encantadia for too long, plant life in the realm begin to wither and die. This would even hold true if the Gem would fall in enemy hands.

Core Elemental Powers

• Teleportation/Ivictus – Keepers of this Gem possess the ability to transport themselves and others from one place to another without occupying the space in between instantaneously, a power normally reserved for Diwata of royal blood (Sang'gre). Additionally, this power can be used to transport large groups of people, a feat only ever seen with this Gem in someone’s care, as Danaya did on more than one occasion. In the 2005 series, Danaya commanded the Gem to find a specific person and teleport her to their location, as she did when she was seeking Lira out.
• Earth Manipulation – A keeper of this Gem possesses the ability to command all manner of earthen material, including rock, sand, dust and soil on an undefined scale. Through this power, the very battlefield the keeper stands on becomes a weapon. Danaya is able to project streams of dust and rock at her targets through her hands or her weapons, open and seal fissures in the earth, mold the likeness of another upon a rock’s surface, burrow themselves and others underground instantaneously to bypass shields, strangle a target by gathering a ring of dust and silt around their necks, fling a mound of soil into another's mouth to keep them from incanting, trigger earthquakes of varying strength in an instant, condensing scattered earthen matter into a single projectile she can direct, levitate and fling rocks of varying masses at their targets, stir the ground to erupt from right under her enemies and even bury entire armies in the sand. Danaya even threatened once that she could bury the entirety of what remained of Hagorn's Hathoria and everyone in it should she command it. Perhaps the most impressive feat this Gem can afford in this regard is the ability to alter entire landscapes according to the keeper’s wishes, raising and shaping entire landmasses from the ground itself. Another noteworthy feat occurred in the 2005 series, when Danaya sealed Lavanea's crater with an enormous mass of earth conjured with the Brilyante, halting its eruption. Additionally, in the 2005 installment, Danaya commanded the Gem to gather and forge the armor that Lira wore to protect herself.
• Plant Manipulation – A keeper of this Gem possesses the ability to direct the growth of all plant life around them. Through this ability, a keeper like Danaya can command trees to bear fruit instantaneously, direct vines to bind or impale their enemies, compel all plant life around them to grow and produce oxygen more aggressively, and even instantaneously spur the growth of entire forests alongside the warping of the landmasses they grow on.
• Animal Manipulation – A keeper of this Gem possesses the ability to interact with all manner of terrestrial animal life around them to varying degrees, as Danaya often did on multiple occasions to gather intelligence, among other purposes. Danaya has also used this power to command animals to act on her behalf, as she did while fighting the bandidos alongside Lira and Wantuk, summoning hordes of insects to attack their opponents.
• Weapon and Armor Summoning - As with all four Gems, the Brilyante ng Lupa is able to summon armor and weaponry for the keeper to use in battle, each weapon set being unique to the keeper who wields it. It also allows the keeper to recall their weapons back into the Gem when not needed.

Animal Manipulation Sub-Abilities

• Animal Sight – A keeper of this Gem is able to see through an animal’s eyes, even hostile ones, as Danaya demonstrated to see through the eyes of the dragon Hagorn summoned as a last-ditch effort to wreak havoc on Encantadia.
• Shapeshifting – A keeper of this Gem possesses the ability to transform into any terrestrial animal they wish. Danaya’s transformations include (but are not limited to) a dog, a rodent, and a wooly mammoth. Her daughter, Terra, has since exhibited the ability to shift between animal forms, from a pigeon to a cat, something Danaya hasn't even accomplished.

Advanced Powers

• Healing – Perhaps the most valuable ability this Gem possesses, a keeper who wields it is able to heal and cure nearly all injuries and diseases in others and themselves with or without being commanded to and whether they're right in front of the keeper or far away, as Danaya frequently demonstrated. It also has the ability to dispel conditions brought upon by curses, as seen when Terra cured Imaw of his blindness caused by his spell on Pirena. When used in conjunction with other Gems, its healing powers are magnified, as seen when Avria used it with the Air and Soul Gems to not only heal her wounds but also restore her strength. Since its re-empowerment, it now possesses the ability to heal multiple people at once, as Terra was able to use the Gem to successfully cure the mortals afflicted with Gargan's curse. However, this power understandably has its limitations. One cannot heal another who injured themselves in an attempt to take their own lives as it goes against the very powers that created the Gems in the first place or those who refuse to be healed by the Gem's power. Also, this Gem cannot revive the dead, nor can it remove an affliction resulting from a pact with a divine being, even with the other Gems assisting it for the latter instance.
  • An extension of this power is the ability to become one with the flora when sustaining grievous bodily harm, allowing the keeper to heal from their injuries unencumbered, as Danaya did after she was attacked by Pirena in the 2005 installment.
  • Self-Resurrection - A power only seen in the 2005 series, a keeper of the Gem who sustains fatal bodily harm while it is in their possession can be brought back from the dead after they become one with the flora around them, though their resurrection requires an external force to activate, that being the tears of a loved one.
• Spell Casting - As with all the Gems, it can be used as a catalyst for spell casting, allowing its keeper to effect changes in reality itself with the use of spoken incantations invoking its power. For instance, this Gem can be used to cast and revoke powerful curses, especially when used in conjunction with the other three Gems, such as Mine-a cursing the entire Hathorian kingdom, Mitena revoking the ability to teleport from Flamarra and Adamus, and the four new keepers when they expelled the Itim na Bato from Danaya's body as well as Gargan's curse from the people of Distrito Sais.
  • Transmutation – A keeper of this Gem possesses the ability to change matter from one form to another, as seen with Danaya creating a near perfect copy of the Gem from soil in the gardens of Lireo and even imbuing it with some of its actual power to effectively deceive Avria.
  • Evocation - A keeper of this Gem possesses the unique ability to send out the Gem from their person to do their bidding without surrendering their hold over it, allowing them to summon it back into their care when it favors them best, as Danaya did once before to protect it from Hagorn. The keeper's location does not appear to be a barrier as well, as Danaya banished the Gem during her exile to the mortal realm and reclaimed it shortly after returning to Encantadia. Danaya from 2005 also summoned the spirits of nature to muzzle the cries of the water elementals causing chaos in Adamya and vanquishing them afterwards.
  • Conjuration - A keeper of this Gem possesses the ability to conjure or summon matter/energy from seemingly nothing. Avria used this Gem in conjunction with the Air and Soul Gems to create the Kubur that invaded and nearly ravaged the kingdom of Lireo. Both Danaya and Alena also used their respective Gems in unison to summon a torrent of powerful energy that consumed the entirety of Etheria and rendered it to rubble, leaving no trace of the accursed kingdom. A keeper of this Gem can also summon its Kambal Diwa on command as an extension of the Gem's essence, acting as an ally to its keeper.
  • Divination – A keeper of this Gem possesses the ability to acquire information on the unknown through supernatural means using the Earth itself as a medium. Of the four Gems, its potential in this regard has been exercised the best, especially in the 2016-2025 installment. Danaya has used the Gem to track another's location through their footsteps or even their earthly bodies, as all living things are within the Gem's dominion; she can also detect both minerals and plants that she may need on her adventures through the Gem's power. She can detect someone from the mortal realm despite being in Encantadia. The Earth would also whisper messages to her, words that she would often heed. Most notably, the Gem is able to show detailed visions of the past to its keeper, visions that often reveal vital information despite being initially limited in this regard. The Gem can even be used to extract information from others, often causing excruciating pain while doing so.
  • Enchantment – A keeper of this Gem possesses the ability to bind their magic onto objects or people, granting them power over their innate attributes. Danaya has used this power to endow Lira with immunity from any weapon formed from earthen materials as well as any attempts on her life by their enemies and especially her sister Pirena. She also used this power to lock a chest that contained Amihan’s last will, only opening it when the time was right. She can also manipulate memories with this power, as she did to the witnesses of her heroics in the mortal realm; her power can even tamper with electronics, wiping the footage on the smartphones that captured her deeds. Avria also used this Gem to activate the properties of the Ginintuang Orasan, calling forth her army of Etherian soldiers from the past. Danaya also used this Gem to enchant the sword once owned by Aquil to remain embedded into the stone she thrust it into, only to be used again by a virtuous soul.
  • Abjuration – A keeper of this Gem possesses the ability to conjure powerful barriers that protect them from all manner of harm to varying extents. These barriers range from personal protection to larger scale barriers able to protect entire kingdoms. The barriers Danaya conjures could even keep the retre at bay. Danaya is able to fortify pre-existing barriers with this ability as well. An additional boon the Gem provides is the ability to defend itself from mental manipulation whenever it’s summoned to the keeper’s side.

Mine-a in the form of a Pashnea protected Amihan from the bully. (Many credited it to be the ability from the Brilyante ng Hangin since Mine-a is in the form of a bird and the gem had a similar ability being granted to its keeper which is the ability to command flying pashneas however the pashnea was Mine-a herself so it's the earth gem's granted ability).

Mine-a in the form of a Pashnea went to the World of Mortals to check on Amihan and Raquim.

Gem Fusion

• Brilyante ng Tubig & Brilyante ng Lupa - When LilaSari and Danaya fused their Brilyantes, they became a fusion, known as DanayaSari, as shown in the episode Danaya-Sari. Danaya and Alena was supposedly going to create a fusion in episode Paghamon to break Avria's shield, but Avria used her weapon to slash in between their palms and Brilyantes to prevent them from fusing. Danaya and Alena combined their Gems' powers once again to reduce the kingdom of Etheria to rubble.
• Brilyante ng Hangin & Brilyante ng Lupa - When Amihan and Danaya fused their Brilyantes, there was a air-earth energy blast, as shown in Bihag.
• Brilyante ng Apoy, Brilyante ng Lupa, and Brilyante ng Tubig - When Pirena, Danaya, and Alena fused their Brilyantes in order to defeat Ether, it created a strong fusion that morphed the Sang'gres and was known as the Ultimate Diwata, as shown in Ivo Live, Encantadia.

Story

King Armeo of Sapiro, the first keeper of the Gem of Earth

The Brilyante ng Lupa was entrusted to King Armeo by Cassiopea as Sapiro's share of the Mother Gem. The conclusion of the war between Hathoria and Sapiro ended with both armies losing a massive amount of soldiers and their respective rulers. The gem was passed unto Raquim before Armeo died due to blood loss. Raquim brought it to Mine-a along with the Gem of Fire and Water for her to protect in Lireo. Lireo would keep the four Gems in a heavily guarded chamber, with Minea only bringing them out once in order to curse Hathoria and its inhabitants.

Many years later, Pirena tried to take the gem away but it crumbled into dust before her, showing that the gem has a sense of security. After the Gem of Fire was stolen by Pirena, Mine-a decided it is best if she entrusts a gem to each of her daughters for safekeeping. Mine-a entrusted the Gem of Earth to Danaya. Danaya kept the Gem of Earth even when she was exiled to the mortal world. Pirena tried to take the Gem of Earth from Danaya but failed to do so because the latter managed to escape when she transformed into a wolf. Hagorn planned to retrieve the Gem of Earth from Danaya and managed to capture her but she commanded the Gem to leave her person for safekeeping without actually relinquishing it.

Danaya creates an enchantment to save the Brilyante ng Lupa from Hagorn or from any Hathor.

When she returned to Encantadia along with Lira, she was able to call the Gem back to her, where it stayed until the end of the first great war. The Gems found their way back to Lireo where they stayed for a long time, fused together as the Inang Brilyante.

However, when new threats began to arise, the Sang'gre were compelled to separate them once more. Danaya would only take the Gem from the guarded chamber whenever she needed it, while Pirena and Alena carried theirs with them. This was exploited by Avria who employed stratagems to steal the 3 Gems in Lireo's possession for Etheria to use. Avria made good use of the Gem to antagonize the Sang'gre and their allies for a time, but Cassiopea was able to forcibly reclaim the Gem of Earth and return it to Danaya, who then kept it with her for the remainder of the war and beyond.

It only left her care when Mitena forcibly stole it from her with aid from the Esperanto. She kept it as a trophy of her conquest along with the other Gems, only using it sparingly. However, after Zaur's attempt on her life, the Gems' twin spirits died defending Mitena, rendering them inert and unleashing a calamity upon all of Encantadia. Banak and Nakba retrieved them in the chaos and returned them to the rebel camp where Pirena kept them for safekeeping until they found a way to restore them.

It was during their time in Devas where they learned that the Gems can be restored if their original twin spirits can be convinced to return to them once more. Terra and Ecnaad ventured into the domain of Harahen, the ancient twin spirit of the Gem of Earth, convincing her to join them through Terra's display of true compassion: the mark of one who is most deserving to keep the Gem of Earth. From there, Harahen returned to the Gem of Earth which Pirena proudly bestowed onto Terra, who has held the Gem ever since.

2005-2006 series

The Brilyante ng Lupa was first kept by Armeo when Cassiopea divided the Elemental gem and gave the Sapiryans their share. Armeo kept the gem in a necklace that he always wears. Arvak later waged a war against Sapiro to get the Brilyante ng Lupa from them. The gem was shown as a solid item. The gem was kept in a bag along with the two other gems collected by Arvak. Raquim managed to retrieve the gems and gave them to Mine-a for safekeeping. Since then it was kept inside a sealed room in Lireo for years. When Pirena had successfully stolen the gem of fire, Mine-a realized it is no longer safe to leave the other gems in the sealed room thus, she entrusted this gem to Danaya. Danaya uses the gem mostly for healing purposes. Danaya lost the gem after Avilan snatched it when she is about to use it to trade Lira with Hagorn. When the gem got lost, the plants and animals in Encantadia felt the effects of losing the gem. Danaya had to retrieve the gem under the sea after Agane has injured Avilan in the sky and dropped it. When Danaya retrieved the gem, the situation in Encantadia became normal again. The gem had always been in Danaya's possession until, when Avria switched bodies with Danaya, the gem became in her possession. After Avria got killed, Ether became its keeper. Ether used its spirit guide against Danaya knowing that Danaya cannot hurt the guide. When Amihan killed Ether, the gem returned to Danaya's possession.

• The gem's shape changed between 2005 and 2016. Originally, the Gem was the largest of the four gems and shaped rectangularly or in an emerald cut but in the remake installment, it is more rounded in shape or in a pillow cut and relatively smaller compared to the other Gems, intended to resemble a seed.
• Fittingly, many of the Gem of Earth's keepers in either installment have Sapiryan blood, including Armeo, Raquim, Danaya, Alena, and Terra.
• It's the only Gem incapable of influencing weather patterns in either installment.
• An editing gag in the 2016 installment was how the Gem of Earth's magic circle would occasionally be the Gem of Air's instead.
• In a recent poll conducted in GMA's website to promote Encantadia Chronicles: Sang'gre, visitors were presented with the question "Which Brilyante would you like to possess?" with the four elemental Gems as choices. The Gem of Earth ranked third on the poll, garnering 20.3% of all votes.
• Due to its appearance on the show First Lady, it is the only Gem to have appeared outside of the Encantadia continuity.
