Verana Deia of Mine-a-ve/Sang'gre Deia is a major character and one of the main protagonists from the Filipino fantasy television series Encantadia Chronicles: Sang'gre, produced by GMA Network. She is one of the next generations of four elemental Sang'gres and is the next keeper of Brilyante ng Hangin after the demise of its previous keeper, Sang'gre Cassandra of Lireo. She is portrayed by Filipino-Palestinian actress Angel Guardian.
Profile[]
Deia is the new guardian of the Air Gem. Being the daughter of Mine-a-ve General Olgana, she is treated with great respect by the soldiers. Her mother, Olgana, served as one of the land’s finest generals. From them, Deia inherited both courage and compassion.
At first, she admired Kera Mitena, seeing her as a strong and just leader. But as she grew older, Deia began to question the queen’s harsh decisions and cruel actions. Guided by her father’s teachings about justice and balance, she learned to think carefully about what is truly right and wrong for Encantadia.
Deia came from a place called Mine-a-ve, a separated land from Encantadia—an icy, cursed realm guarded by a powerful creature known as Arsus. The people of Mine-a-ve believed they were doomed by a curse and lived in fear of Arsus’s wrath. After Mitena defeated Arsus, she was hailed as a hero and crowned their queen. Under her rule, the people of Mine-a-ve supported her mission to destroy Encantadia—until they saw how merciless and unfair she became to her own subjects.
Now, torn between loyalty to her homeland and her sense of justice, Deia stands as a brave guardian who vows to protect Encantadia from tyranny and restore harmony among its lands.
Personality[]
Despite growing up in the blistering cold in Mine-ave, Deia's innocence shined through. Watching Mitena slay the giant Arsus inspired Deia, causing her to emulate the former well into her adulthood. When they first came to the shores of Encantadia, she was fully invested in Mitena's agenda, freely fighting alongside her people in their conquest of the neighboring continent. However, as time went on, Deia became more disillusioned by the atrocities committed in the name of the queen she once idolized. And even while she carried the standard of Mine-ave, others recognized the kindness in her heart, as Imaw is reminded of the former queen Amihan when in Deia's presence. She reached a breaking point when Mitena blatantly refused to rescue her mother, Olgana, from the mortal realm after failing to vanquish Pirena. This act of apathy and disregard was instrumental to Deia's development, spurring her to act in rebellion against the queen and nearly losing her life because of it.
During the initial stages of her exile, her only goal was to reunite with her mother, a goal that became a point of contention for the rebels who took her in despite their own misgivings. Her single-minded goal to find her mother in the mortal realm put herself and others at risk, losing Imaw's Balintataw in the process. Eventually, she learned to set aside her own personal desires and slowly acclimated to life amongst the rebels, seeing as they ultimately share the same aim: to liberate Encantadia from Mitena and her forces. Deia's personality shined better among their ranks, where she is seen as a gentle, compassionate soul who would prefer to preserve life, all life, even that of her people.
She bonded with Terra the best among the three new Sang'gre as they both share similar backgrounds of being from foreign lands and having lost their mothers, seeing her as someone she can genuinely trust. She trusts Terra so much that she would surrender her Gem to Terra once her duties to Encantadia are done and it was only after Terra told her that she would have killed Olgana as Adamus did that her perspective on how to handle her mother's threat changed. Deia regards Adamus with similar fondness, especially because he would often defend her from the prejudices of their more aggressive allies, such as Pirena and Flamarra. Lastly, Deia knew to distance herself from Flamarra and her fearsome temper, indulging her occasionally, but would slowly earn her respect and admiration every time she proved herself committed to their shared cause, even when confronted with her own mother.
The first real test of her resolve was during her quest to convince the original Kambal Diwa of the Brilyante ng Hangin to return to their side and re-empower the inert Gem. While her fellow keepers were tested for their humility, compassion, and good judgment, Deia already possessed these qualities. Instead, she was challenged on her courage, the ability to look past her blood ties and see their mission through, a challenge she succeeded in even at the prospect of her mother's rejection, earning both Erenea's and Amihan's admiration as well as her predecessor's blessing to inherit the Gem she once wielded. Again, during the battle for Hathoria, Deia had to kill one of her countrymen to save Terra's life, something that gave her real pause. Finally, in the many encounters she had with her mother after her return to Encantadia, she did not falter in Olgana's attempts to convince her to rejoin her people, though Deia's love for her mother kept her from doing real harm against her.
Despite being normally level-headed and calm, she is not immune to bouts of extreme emotion, such as when she was angered by Mitena's flippant refusal to rescue her mother. Additionally, her naivete was front and center when she asked her fellow Sang'gre to promise to spare Olgana's life and have her imprisoned instead, all the while knowing that such things cannot be assured in war. She is also not above the occasional childish tendency, as she simply rolled her eyes when Flamarra blamed her for Terra's anger at learning of her elder sister's fate. Finally, since Olgana's death at Adamus's hand, she harbored an uncharacteristic deal of resentment towards him, so much so that she is willing to surrender the Gem of Air to Terra, cut ties with her allies in Encantadia, and return to Mine-ave to help rebuild her homeland with her people just to distance herself from him, however reasonable and heroic her ends may be. Despite her grief, she was able to recognize that Adamus only ever killed Olgana to defend himself but because he broke his promise to her to spare Olgana's life, Deia isn't sure if she is able to forgive him, at least not at present. However, after finding out that Olgana was responsible for killing yet another ally of theirs in Mona, Deia vehemently rejected any semblance of a desire for reconciliation with her mother (or her father), personally making it her mission to end their threat once and for all. That being said, her love for her family did not truly go away, as Gargan was able to exploit this, allowing him to manipulate Deia into releasing his allies from the Sanggre's clutches. This act is one that Deia regards with great shame, to the point where she is willing to surrender her Gem to Flamarra, recognizing that she is a liability to her allies because of what she had done.
In combat, Deia is efficient and decisive in her every move. While she prefers not to take another life unless absolutely necessary, it doesn't mean she is unwilling to do what needs to be done when the situation calls for it, especially when it means saving the lives of her allies and friends. Of the four new keepers, it is Deia who is seen to maximize the potential of her Gem the best both in and out of battle, displaying her creativity and resourcefulness with how she makes use of it. Additionally, Deia showed signs of being a future leader for her people, foregoing her initial plans of abandoning her responsibilities in exchange for releasing her repentant Mine-ave imprisoned in Lireo, asking them to wait for her in their homeland so that they could rebuild it together.
Story[]
Deia lived in Mine-a-ve along with Olgana and Veshdita. When Mitena defeated Arsus, Deia was the first to kneel before the new Kera of Mine-a-ve. She greatly admired Mitena and dreamed to become like her so she started training. It was halted by the arrival of Olgana and Veshdita who asked what she was doing. When she told them that she admired Mitena and wanted to be like her, they shunned it calling her sickly. Deia was excluded from being trained by Mitena. As Deia grows up, she is asked to join Mitena’s mission to invade Encantadia. Deia wants to volunteer to help take over Lireo, but Mitena tells her to team up with her mother, Olgana, to attack the other kingdoms instead. During the big battle between the Mine-a-ve army and the united forces of Lireo, Sapiro, Hathoria, and Adamya, Deia faces Adamus for the first time. Adamus calls them terrible people, and Deia fires back with the same insult. She defeats him and is about to stab him, but then she hesitates. Adamus challenges her to kill him if she wants to stop him from seeking revenge. Just then, Flamarra arrives, thankful that Adamus is safe. Adamus admits that some of the Mine-a-ve invaders are actually good people. Later, Deia, her mother, and the Mine-a-ve soldiers attack Adamya conquer all the lands in Encantadia for their leader, Kera Mitena. But Deia pitied the Adamyans. In her own way, she helped an Encantada that was being harassed by soldiers. In her own ways, Deia helped the Sang'gres such as preventing Flamarra from being beheaded, giving a tip on Mitena's plans to Adamus and Flamarra while they were imprisoned and shooting using her arrows the Mine-a-ves to stop them from chasing the escapees. Deia was driven to defect from Mitena when she closed the portal while her mother Olgana hasn't returned yet. Zaur orders Deia to put a sleeping potion on Mitena's tea so she can take the Esperanto. Mitena was on guard and made her drink also the tea she had offered but Deia didn't fall asleep because of the potion Zaur gave her to combat the effects. Thinking Mitena had fallen asleep, Deia went to her sleeping chamber and attempted to take the Esperanto but it repelled her. Mitena reveals she was awake the whole time awaiting her move. Deia was captured and sentenced to death but was saved by a masked archer. During the commotion, Ednu told Deia that her fate now lies in her hands and allows her to escape. Deia was almost captured by the soldiers but was saved by pashnea under the orders of Cassiopea. Deia was brought to the camp of the Sang'gres in Asilades but Pirena and Flamarra were very hostile to her.
Deia was chosen by the Air gem to be its new guardian.[1]
Deia lost the balintataw when she escaped with the key. She was prevented from opening another portal and returned to their camp. She joins the Sang'gres in their journey to Devas to revive the gems. There, she met Amihan who once kept the Brilyante ng Hangin. Amihan thanked her for accepting her duty. Amihan accompanied her to convince Erenea to return to the gem. Deia successfully triumphed over Erenea's test, choosing duty over her mother. Erenea agrees to return to the gem. Deia formally becomes the keeper of the Brilyante ng Hangin after Amihan passed it to her.
Deia was questioned by Flamarra especially she hesitates to hurt her mother. Even after the kingdoms were liberated, Deia still wasn't happy.
For most of her life, Deia believed her father had died or she will never meet, until Ednu captured her to supposedly to offer to Mitena. She wakes up and hears the conversation of Ednu, Zaur and Daron. Zaur objected to use Deia, revealing he is her father. Deia found it hard to accept and left.
Appearance[]
Sang'gre Deia dons her "baluting pandigma" by the grace and power of the Brilyante ng Hangin.
Her armor features sweeping lines and raised patterns on the bodice, skirt, and helmet that mimic feathers, wings, or wind currents, representing the Air element, while the color palette evokes the open sky and clouds. The symbols for Lireo and Lambana (the fairy-like creature who are also associated with the Air Gem and often serve the royal family) are usually integrated into the ornate, winged shapes of her shoulder armor and helmet crest, signifying her royal allegiance and the airy that has a freedom like the wind itself. After saying the spell to banish Gargan’s deceit, her hair changed it looked like she had blue designs or extensions and her eyes began to shine with a glowing blue light.
Young Deia’s childhood look is described as a soft, youthful face with long straight brown hair and an innocent expression, reflecting her growth in the icy realm of Mineave. Her outfit is built for survival in the cold, featuring a textured teal tunic layered with a thick, fur-lined vest and a long, pale blue scarf that drapes down her torso. To navigate the frozen terrain, she wears heavy boots with thick fur trim and dark leggings, completing her rugged yet ethereal look with a simple wooden staff used for trekking through the snow.

Deia's outfit in Mine-a-ve is a unique piece that draws heavily on a North American/Central Asian tribal archer/warrior look (like some Mongolian or Northern indigenous styles). It is inspired to Katara in The Last: Air Bender, comes from the shared use of a high, protective collar, contrasting trim, and tribal/winter clothing cues often associated with warrior women.
Deia's oufit during training, usually a practical outfit. Her top is like a grey sports bra. Her skirt is layered and looks woven for flexibility and protection usually light or blueish. She has arm bracers and a shawl. The skirt's design looks like braided strips.

Deia's outfit in Devas as a temporary Ivtre. Her dress is usually a soft, pale color possibly white or a very light blue features a unique halter neckline with intricate gold detailing. This gold forms a crisscross pattern across her chest and shoulders, resembling interwoven ribbons or braids.
Love Interest[]
Adamus[]

It is hinted at the second version of the full trailer that Deia will be Sang'gre Adamus' love interest.
Powers and Abilities[]
Deia can project air energy for defense or attack, as seen in Episode 68.
Deia is a strong member of Mine-a-ve who has many skills that are commonly used in their kingdom. Imaw acknowledged her good heart and kindness, just like Amihan, making her a suitable candidate to become the new keeper.
- Ivictus (Teleportation) - As the Sang'gre birthmark appeared on Deia's shoulder blade after receiving the Brilyante ng Hangin, she has a special ability that lets her instantly teleport from one place to another without traveling the space in between while allowing to take other people with her. She is the first being with this power to display the ability to traverse continental distances, as her familiarity with Mine-a-ve allowed her to teleport there from Encantadia without real difficulty.
- Air Manipulation - Surprisingly, Deia was revealed to possess the ability to control air currents even before receiving her Gem, an anomaly considering this only ever happens when someone has held a Gem for as long as the daughters of Mine-a have. This power allowed her to save the lives of both Pirena and Terra who got caught in one of the traps set up around the rebel camp's perimeter, halting the advancing arrows mere inches from striking their targets. Once she possessed the Gem of Air, these innate powers were magnified, allowing her to accomplish feats such as blowing away her foes with the air pressure from her pick-axe's swings, amplifying the damage potential of her arrows, flight by the conjuring of winds strong enough to carry her into the air, and the summoning of whirlwinds.
- Aerokinetic Agility - Deia exhibits exceptional combat skill and innate aerokinesis pre-gem, with graceful, Amihan-like movements; the Air Gem amplifies her speed, power, and fluidity among the most skilled Sang'gre.
- Excellent Combatant - Self-taught since childhood, Deia possesses incredible skill in both armed and unarmed combat moves with the grace of Hara Duri-e Amihan, with a preference for using pick-axes and her bow and arrow as her main weapons.
- Longevity - After regaining the symbol on her back, Deia becomes a full fledged Sang'gre. This grants her eternal youth and a much longer lifespan than other Encantados. Even if she falls ill or dies, her body will always retain its youthful appearance.
Weaponry[]
- Huni at Hi'aw (Axes): Air gem granted this weapon. Deia wields a powerful weapon capable of making strong cuts and impacts. During battle, bluish-white, airy smoke emanates from it, glowing the same color as Amihan’s sword. Deia can throw this sharp weapon with incredible speed, like the wind itself. Deia’s weapons came from the word Huni and Hi’aw (pronounced Hiyaw), are linked to sound on Huni means a song or tune, and Hi’aw means a shout or call.
- Agaas (Frost Bow): She can use a bow and arrows to shoot enemies accurately. Agaas means “harsh noise” in Tagalog, matching her element perfectly.
- Brilyante ng Hangin: As the current guardian of the Air Gem, Deia exhibited surprising mastery over its many capabilities despite having only recently received it, even using it in ways previous keepers haven't attempted. Alongside its standard abilities to control air currents, fly, and teleport via Ivictus, she has used the Gem to induce sleep, detect lies, anticipate enemy movement, and facilitate interdimensional communication.
Quote[]
"Deia, natatangi ka. Pinili ka ng sagisag, tulad nila. Walang duda, ito ang iyong tadhana." - Emre to Deia
Emre believes she's worthy and special, and it's her destiny to be the new keeper of the Air Gem.
Trivia[]
- The name "Deia" was derived from the daughter of Iza Calzado, who played Amihan in the TV series "Encantadia" in 2005. Mark Reyes, former director of the new series "Sang'gre," asked Iza for permission to use the name of her daughter. Iza felt honored and agreed, stating that as long as the character of Deia has a good heart and good things happen to her, she is happy with the name being used.[2]
- As such, Deia is the only character in the entire franchise overtly named after a person in real life.
- Deia is the name of a municipality in Spain that holds great sentimental value for Iza Calzado.
- Deia is one of two Keepers of the Elemental Gems to not have come from Encantadia, the other being Paopao from the mortal realm.
- She is the only Sang'gre to wield a ranged weapon in combat in all iterations of the show, that being her bow and arrows known as Agaas. Her pickaxes, Huni and Hi'aw, also function as ranged weapons when needed.
- It is interesting to note that the color scheme of her armor is more akin to 2005's Amihan instead of her 2016 iteration, with silver and blue pieces over black underclothing instead of varying shades and tints of blue. Also, like both versions of Amihan, she is the only keeper with a cape featured in her armor.
- Like her fellow Mine-ave, Deia is an original character with no counterpart in the 2005 installment.
- Mirroring the bond that Amihan and Danaya shared, Deia appears to be closest with Terra among her fellow Sang'gre. She would even come to regard Amihan herself as a friend during their brief time in Devas.
