Mitena (formerly as Kera Mitena) is the primary antagonist in Encantadia Chronicles: Sang'gre Book 1, and the central antagonist in Book 2 of the same series, a Philippine fantasy television series produced by GMA Network. After assassinating Hara Cassandra of Lireo, she assumes the throne, becoming the de facto queen. She later declares herself queen of the entire land of Encantadia following her successful conquest of the remaining kingdoms and acquisition of all four Elemental Gems. Upon abandoning Esperanto and redeeming herself after her twin sister's sacrifice, she now becomes the new Mata ng Encantadia (Eye of Encantadia).
Mitena first appeared briefly at the conclusion of Encantadia 2016 series, where she was depicted ruling over a northern, ice-covered Kingdom. At the time, the character was unnamed and was referred to by fans as "Cassiopea’s fraternal twin" or the "Ice Queen." She was portrayed in that appearance by Solenn Heussaff, who also played Cassiopea. In Encantadia Chronicles: Sang'gre, the role of Mitena is portrayed by Rhian Ramos.
Profile[]
She is Cassiopea's fraternal twin and ruler of the Mine-a-ve, she has a pet owl. She knows about Cassiopea's ambition of becoming a Bathaluman. She also plans to soon conquer the land of the Encantados, making her personality antagonistic. Cassiopeia and Mitena were born in the world of Encantadia. A prophecy says that a child raised in the Mortal World will avenge wrongs and restore peace to Encantadia, which will make Mitena more enraged. She is determined to reclaim all the kingdoms of Encantadia and will do whatever it takes to achieve her goal.
Appearance[]
Prior to obtaining Esperanto, Mitena was originally black-haired. When she obtained Esperanto, her appearance transformed, and her hair became white.
She wears a white crystallized dress with high slits on both sides and a crown made of ice. Her front hair is braided. Starting with Episode 13, she started wearing the necklace where Anaca was trapped. But later she stopped wearing it again.

She also wore a gray gown at some point and a black gown with a starburst pendant. When she was held captive, she wore a beige with black stripes halter-style dress.
Her armor consists of her ice crown and armor made of ice. Her hair became curled and Esperanto became a sword.
Personality[]
Born a twin but cast aside as cursed, her pain and loneliness shaped the fierce anger she carried. Mitena was abandoned and unloved as an infant. She seeks love and treatment she never experienced. She wasn't given a name so she took the word she was called when she was born: "Mitena" meaning cursed as her name. Her younger self had a positive outlook, hoping her parents would go back for her and she was excited when Imaw offered her a paneya (bread) if she told her story; however, remembering all her sufferings and how her father disregarded her, she chose to shun the bitter past instead of telling it. She unleashed her powers because Imaw insisted on knowing more. Many had attempted to ask Mitena of her origins and her past including Deia but Mitena would always threaten them should they ask again.
She was imprisoned by Arsus, starved for days, and made to keep singing for him. Her sufferings made her cautious and refuse to trust anyone. That also became the foundation for her anger toward her parents, Cassiopea, and the entire Encantadia.
After obtaining power and killing Arsus, Mitena built her own queendom in the territory where she was banished. She swore that she would have her revenge on all the descendants of Memen and Ornia and spread her darkness to the land where she was born. And that, she did, as her armies spread through the land like a plague, enslaving everyone they could capture and killing anyone who would resist while Mitena herself forcefully stole the Gems that were seat of power in the realm.
As Kera of Encantadia, Mitena was imperious, intimidating, and hungered for power still. She only valued strength and loyalty among her subjects, rejecting any sign of weakness and snuffing out any traitors among her ranks. However, her arrogance and single-mindedness were her fatal flaws, as she believed her power made her untouchable and she never considered the possibility that her own subjects would turn on her. Left a broken shell after Zaur's betrayal, she refused any semblance of compassion and ventured alone throughout the wilderness of the Asilades.
Alone and defenseless, Mitena found herself alongside Terra, who she initially rejected at first due to her mistrust. However, as Terra continued to show her genuine compassion, she found herself slowly taking down her walls and allowed herself to accept Terra's gestures while also extending some of her own, however awkward they can be. She even came to save Terra's life at one point and while she parted with her, she held Terra in high regard and even allowed herself to be assisted by Vitha, a loyal dama of hers.
Despite the challenges that came with reclaiming her throne, including Vitha's death, Mitena prevailed with the aid of Olgana and Veshdita, punishing Zaur in the process by cursing him to be a mindless slave. Though she returned to Lireo, she wanted to find and execute Terra, not knowing she was the girl who she came to call a friend. When the truth was revealed, Mitena was furious, exhausting every method she could think of to avert the prophecy and kill Terra, no matter how vindictive the means are. When she finally faced true defeat, she shuddered at the sight of Terra being corrupted by the Esperanto and bore witness to her twin sister, Cassiopea, giving her life to save her. This final act of compassion opened Mitena's eyes to the depth of love she so blindly rejected due to her anger. It was this moment that marked a true change in Mitena's character.
At present, she no longer wishes anyone harm but the abject rejection she experiences from everyone in Encantadia only devastates her further. She also longs for death so that she may be reunited with her parents and sister in the afterlife. However, once her visions of calamity came to her, she felt it her responsibility to warn Alena despite knowing of the rage harbored against her. However, as her resentment towards her predicament festers within her, the anger she once tried to release returned, vowing to one day wreak havoc upon Encantadia given the chance.
Encantadia Chronicles: Sang'gre[]
Mitena feeling very lonely because Arsus locked her in a cage for a long period of time.
Despite being the sister of Cassiopea, Mitena was an unwanted child of Memen the first king of Etheria, and his wife, Ornia, as she was born as an Ivtre and viewed as cursed child. Because of this, her father cast her away through a portal to a desolate, snowy region in Encantadia called Minea-ve, using a powerful staff. Arsus, a powerful monster living in the icy land of Minea-ve, gave life to Mitena by creating her body. When Arsus found baby Mitena, he used his magical black smoke to transform her. When Mitena is a child she asked Arsus to help her return to Encantadia, but he refused and kept her prisoner in his lair. As she grew up, Arsus forced Mitena to sing for him. Later, Ether, a cursed Bathaluman turned into a mortal snake, appeared and freed Mitena from captivity. Ether then guided Mitena to find the powerful weapon called Esperanto to gain greater strength and later she found that a powerful archangel guarded the powerful weapon, she slash her throat and then eventually died. After that, an owl being appeared. She had been trapped by the archangel for a long time. She begged not to be killed and promised to be loyal. After getting the scepter, she became very powerful being. She stabbed Ether, and later found out that Ether was actually planning to control her and just use her for his own purposes. She would would rise to queendom and return to Encantadia, seeking vengeance upon the descendants of Memen and Ornia unleashing upheaval and destruction upon all the kingdoms of Encantadia.
Cassiopea had a special power to see future dangers. Because of this, she was killed by someone unknown (later found out to be Mitena). Before she died, she sent a message by using telepathy to Sang'gre Pirena, Alena, and Danaya while they were watching Amihan’s weapon, waiting for her to come back.
She used her long, icy sword to defeat Arsus. The people of Minea-ve were curious about how she won and where she came from. After that, she declared herself the Queen (Kera) of Minea-ve and began training her army to cause chaos and destruction in Encantadia. Cassiopea appeared to her apologizing for what their father did to her, but told her that she and Encantadia don't have a liability to her. Following Anaca's advice, made the army stronger and well-protected by using Esperanto and proceeded to attack Encantadia. She first went to Lireo posing as Cassiopea Hara Cassandra noticed something was different with her and recognized she isn't Cassiopea. Mitena kills all the soldiers and transforms to her true appearance. She fights Hara Cassandra and takes the Brilyante ng Hangin from her and kills her using a spear. She transforms into her appearance and enters the museum of Lireo. She curses the past queens, saying Memen took care of them. Alena and Adamus arrives and sees her. They greet each other but the Brilyante ng Tubig shielded Alena. They fought, and Mitena obtained the Brilyante ng Tubig and captured Alena in a crystal, and Adamus feeling so helpless he flees from the battle.
The Encantado army faces off against the Mine-a-ves, led by Mitena, Zaur, Daron, Kosshava, Veshdita, and Deia. Adamus points out that Mitena is the one who defeated Cassandra and Alena. Mitena says war will cause many deaths, but they can choose to kneel and accept her as their new queen. Pirena quietly looks to her friends to see how they feel, and seeing their determination, she turns to face the enemy again. A battle starts in Lireo, with Pirena and Armea leading the Encantado charge. At first, the Encantados have the advantage, but Mitena watches calmly. Armea tries to surprise Mitena from behind using Ivictus, but Mitena dodges and asks her who she is. Armea says she’s the Queen of Sapiro and wants revenge for what Mitena did to her mother. After beating Armea, Mitena thinks she might be useful later and traps her in a crystal to send back to Mine-a-ve.
Pirena challenges Mitena, showing her the Fire Gem and attacking. Mitena reveals the Water Gem and says she will take the Fire Gem too. Their gems clash, but Mitena uses the Esperanto gem to gain the upper hand. Pirena struggles, which distracts Azulan, who gets hit by Daron and Zaur. Flamarra sees her father fall and wants to fight back, but Adamus tells her to run since they’re losing, and they both teleport away. Danaya comes to help Pirena, but Pirena warns that Mitena is pulling their gems to herself. Realizing Mitena is too strong, Pirena teleports away, leaving Danaya behind. Alone, Danaya faces Mitena’s power, falls unconscious, loses her armor, and Mitena takes the Earth Gem. After taking over Lireo, Sapiro, and Hathoria by nightfall, Mitena speaks to the captured Encantados. She says all their leaders and queens are gone except for one who escaped. Mitena orders them to kneel and accept her as queen, but most refuse. Zaur kills a nearby soldier to force obedience, and some start kneeling. Wantuk eventually gives in when Mitena approaches. Zaur threatens more violence, so Mayca stops him and kneels, making Soldarius kneel too. Mitena sends Olgana to lead an army to conquer Adamya next. She says she’s ready to face Cassiopea and finish her conquest.
Using the gems to find Cassiopea, Mitena visits her and uses the Esperanto. Cassiopea hugs Mitena, but Mitena pushes her away, calling her an enemy. Cassiopea reminds her they are sisters, but Mitena denies it, saying only Cassiopea was loved by their parents. Cassiopea says that was their father’s mistake and apologizes on his behalf since he is gone. Mitena doesn’t believe her and traps Cassiopea inside a purple crystal.
Mitena was a merciless ruler which drove Zaur to betray her. Mitena became unconscious but was saved by a dama. Unsure of her safety, Mitena uses Ivictus to escape. She is found by Terra, who introduced herself as Naya. Mitena likewise introduced herself as Samina. Terra's kindness to her made her smile genuinely. However she sees Terra with a lambana which made her think she's one of the enemies. Mitena decides not to appear to her anymore and proceeds to planning on how to come back to power.
With the information given by Ayeshka, Mitena secretly went to the Lirean armory to take the Kabilan. She disguises herself as Ayeshka and seductively danced to make Zaur complacent, making it easier for her to kill him. However her plan fails as Zaur was able to sense her intentions. Mitena was knocked unconscious and returns to her true appearance. Zaur locks her up and kills Vitha in front of her.
With the help of Olgana and Veshdita that just returned, Mitena was able to return to power and punished Zaur.
Terra attempted to make peace with them however the conditions Mitena was asking such as surrendering the gems were too much hence, peace wasn't achieved and the battle continued.
Mitena saw Danaya as her ace against Terra so she took the Itim na Bato to corrupt Danaya and make her kill Terra however, the plan failed. Olgana suggested to go to the mortal world where Terra's foster family lives. She meets Cami who gave Mona and Javier to her in exchange of power.
Mitena killed Javier driving Terra to fight against her. Mitena lost the Esperanto and her armor making her defenseless. She appeals to Terra as Samina stopping her from killing her. Mitena retreats and finds the Esperanto being held by Zaur. Zaur revealed he's no longer under her control and attacks her. Cassiopea shields her and dies.
Mitena for the last time, held the Esperanto to end Zaur. After killing him, she throws the Esperanto and left. She returned to Encantadia and was thinking of where to go. A group of Encantados found her and brought her to Lireo.
Intelligence[]
Mitena hates betrayals the most and always cautious on possible threats on her life. She would resort to methods and tests on her servant's loyalty. She saw through Deia's pretense and ordered her to get her ring so she could detoxify the tea she brought for her and ordered a dama to pose as her sleeping while she hid to see what Deia will do. She also made her soldiers eat a fruit to know if they're loyal.
Talents[]
Mitena is shown to be good in dancing when she shapeshifted as Ayeshka. She is also skilled in drawing and was able to draw the Sang'gres' faces.
Powers and Abilities[]
Mitena using Esperanto. She sends two flying eyes by saying the magic words "Viresh Kerano Gentra." to show her anger to the slaves of Lireo.
A sheer contrast to her sister, Cassiopea, many of Mitena's abilities are acquired from weapons or artifacts in her possession or bestowed upon her by greater beings as opposed to innate abilities honed through centuries of experience. However, despite this, she possesses powers of her own, born from her Sang'gre lineage and her lengthy existence.
Current Abilities[]
- Ivictus - As a Diwata of royal heritage (Sang'gre), she possesses the innate ability to move from one place to another without occupying the space in between. She initially relied on the Esperanto to access this power, but when she lost it, she learned that she could do so without it.
- Shape-shifting - Mitena possesses the ability to change her shape into the physical form of another. She did not require access to the Esperanto or the Gem of Fire to use this ability, one that very few people innately possess. She has taken the form of Cassandra, Ayeshka, and a standard Mine-ave soldier.
- Longevity - Mitena possesses an incredibly long lifespan, especially considering she is the twin of the first queen of Lireo, making her one of the oldest living beings in Encantadia.
- Precognition - Bestowed upon her by Cassiopea as part of her new fate, Mitena possesses the ability to foresee the future in grave detail, something that she cannot trigger of her own accord.
- Siphoning - A latent ability Mitena possesses, she was known to absorb the life force of other living beings in infancy, hence why she was deemed cursed by the healer who birthed her. A power she only ever accessed in infancy, it has yet to manifest once more now in her adulthood.
- Immortality - As part of her new role designated by her sister Cassiopea, Mitena cannot be killed by conventional means, as any injuries she sustained from attacks against her would heal instantaneously.
Former Abilities[]
- Temperature Manipulation (Negative) - Mitena possessed the ability to generate temperatures low enough to create ice and snow, often channeled through the Esperanto. This has been her main form of offense, often in the form of streams of blistering cold, powerful enough to freeze the retre that were meant to deliver the corpses of Mayca, her son, and other rebels to Devas and even overwhelm some of the most esteemed keepers of Emre's Elemental Gems.
- Spell Casting - Through the Esperanto, Mitena was able to cast spells, allowing her to effect changes in reality. Some of her most notable feats include the conjuration of winged disembodied eyeballs that project her image in the sky for all of Encantadia to see, the forced revocation of the Elemental Gems from their keepers, housing her enemies in crystal prisons and cloaking them from being found even by divine eyes, and turning Zaur into a mindless slave.
- The Powers of the Elemental Gems - For a time, Mitena was the sole keeper of all four Elemental Gems, granting her access to all manner of powers they afford. Her most notable feats include putting out the forest fires around Lireo with the Water Gem, divining Amihan's fate, casting protections around her chambers, and even revoking the power of Ivictus from Adamus and Flamarra.
Weaponry[]
Mitena holding the Esperanto.
- Esperanto (formerly) - A divine weapon guarded by a cursed archangel. It can shoot strong blasts and freeze enemies and is believed to be strong enough to defeat powerful elemental gems and even gods. The Esperanto helps Mitena use her powers by sending out powerful white energy beams that can kill or knock out anything they hit. The Sang'gres destroyed this weapon, and when it was destroyed, black smoke that looked like an angel appeared.
- Tungkod ng Balintataw (formerly) - Mitena received this staff after Ovlar Zaur took it from Imaw during a raid at the Adamyan library. Zaur gave it to her to help find some rebels who escaped. Later on, Pirena takes the Balintataw during a secret mission in Lireo.
- Kabilan (formerly) - When Mitena sneaks into Lireo pretending to be a Ayeshka, she also takes her sister’s weapon, Kabilan, to use against Zaur, who betrayed her. Afterward, Cassiopea secretly takes back the Kabilan before heading to the human world to fight in the war against Mitena and the Mine-a-ves.
- The Four Elemental Gems (formerly) - During her invasion of Encantadia, Mitena forcibly took the Gems from their current keepers, keeping them on her person as a status symbol and rarely ever using them unless absolutely necessary. However, Pirena reclaims the Fire Gem after Mitena mistakenly secedes its care to Olgana in the Mortal Realm. Soon after, she would lose access to the remaining three Gems after Zaur's coup, never to keep them again.
Limitations[]
There are limits even with her godly powers, as Pirena once mentioned that she killed Ether and absorbed the Bathaluman's power.[1]
- If she didn’t have the Esperanto, she would be completely powerless, which shows what happened when Zaur betrayed Mitena.
- After the gems were brought back to life, Mitena can no longer take them because Flamarra, Deia, Adamus, and Terra restored the elemental gems in Devas. These gems now hold the ancient twin spirits, making them more powerful and faithful to their new owners.
- Throughout the series, only the Bathalas or Bathalumans are known to possess the power to counter and limit Mitena's seer-like abilities.
Trivia[]
- Mitena means isinumpa (cursed) in Enchan.
- Unlike her sister, Cassiopea, she can communicate in Tagalog using her mouth. She also can speak the Mine-a-ve language.
- It was shown that she has a birthmark of a Sang'gre on her back, which means she is a diwata.
- Mitena’s story was like Pirena’s because she felt unloved, even by her own parents, who ended up rejecting her.
- Mitena is inspired from the movies and novels: Queen Elsa from Disney's Frozen, Queen Jadis from The Chronicles of Narnia series and Queen Freya from The Huntsman: Winter's War.
- Mitena is the third warrior princess (Sang'gre) and third queen (Hara) of the kingdom Lireo to successfully collect and wield all four magical Elemental Gems, continuing the legacy started by Cassiopea and Minea before her.
- Rhian Ramos shared that her character in Encantadia Chronicles: Sang'gre isn't purely evil, as her actions have deeper reasons tied to her backstory. This has sparked speculation among fans that she might eventually become an ally of the diwatas in the future.
- Mitena stands apart as the very first living Encantada, born from a half-Diwata and a half-Etherian. She accomplished something no one else had: killing Ether, a powerful Bathaluman who cursed as a snake. The twist is Mitena herself carries Etherian blood, so she ended up destroying a "Goddess of Creation" which being credited with establishing Ancient Kingdom of Etheria and its entire lineage. Ether who was meant to be her ancestor and goddess, ultimately became her greatest enemy.
- She is the last known character of Encantadia in the 2016 series.
- On November 3, 2023, it was announced that Rhian Ramos is the new cast for Kera Mitena (Ice Queen).
- Wikipedia and fans once thought that Cassiopea's sister was named "Casilda" before the actual name was officially revealed.
- There are rumors that Rhian Ramos was part of the cast in the original version of the 3rd season of Encantadia 2005 that was cancelled, which is Encantadia: The Second Saga, but she clarified that she auditioned for the 2016 version and was rejected. Now, she is thankful to be part of the new Encantadia series as Mitena.
- Mitena bares strong similarities to the oracle Cassandra from Greek mythology, blessed with visions by a divine being but ignored by those who hear it.
